Use the information listed below to determine the sites and dates for which you will be available this summer. You can apply to be considered for multiple sites and programs. Administrative staff are required to arrive a few days earlier than residential and academic staff; the dates listed below are for residential and academic staff members.

Field Studies Positions

Group Leader: The Group Leader for a Field Study is the chief administrator for the program and is responsible for smooth and efficient program operations. The Group Leader reports to the Assistant Director of Field Studies, coordinates housing, dining, disciplinary matters, program finances, and logistical coordination with host institutions/sites. The Group Leader serves as the main student supervisor during all non-class times.

Instructor: Instructors are responsible for creating and delivering challenging, appropriate, and stimulating course material for classes of 18-36 gifted students during the Field Studies.

Teaching Assistant: Teaching Assistants (TAs) support classroom instruction and provide assistance to 18-36 students during the Field Studies.

Residential Counselor: Residential Counselors (RCs) supervise groups of 12-16 students.

Institutes Positions

On-Site Director: An On-Site Director provides leadership and oversees the daily logistics at the Institutes. He or she oversees the daily operation of the program and ensures the completion of all financial, administrative, and supervisory duites.

Operations Coordinator: An Operations Coordinator manages administrative duties and organizes the program on-site office of the Institutes.

Instructor: Instructors are responsible for creating and delivering challenging, appropriate, and stimulating course material for classes of 18-36 students during the Institutes.

Teaching Assistant: Teaching Assistants support classroom instruction and provide assistance to 18-36 students during the Institutes.

Residential Counselor: Residential Counselors supervise groups of 12-16 students.

General Qualifications

  • Residential Counselor applicants must have completed at least one year in college by the time they begin work for Duke TIP in the summer.
  • Teaching Assistant and Operations Coordinator applicants must have completed at least two years in college by the time they begin work for Duke TIP in the summer.
  • Instructor applicants must have completed college and at least one year of graduate school, classroom teaching, or professional employment by the time they begin work for Duke TIP in the summer.
  • On-Site Director applicants must have completed college and are usually returning staff, but we will also consider highly qualified applicants with excellent experience in residential life.

These are minimum education requirements. Duke TIP welcomes applications from college upperclassmen or graduate students for residential or Teaching Assistant positions, as well as Instructor candidates who hold a Ph.D. or Ed.D.

Duke TIP policy does not allow staff members to enroll in summer session courses or hold other jobs during the period of employment.
