Administrative Positions
- On-Site Director: An On-Site Director (OSD) oversees the daily logistics at each Summer Studies Program campus. He or she ensures the completion of all administrative duties, controls and reports expenses, and assists with planning residential activities. The OSD reports directly to the Coordinator of Educational Programs at Duke TIP.
- Academic Coordinator: An Academic Coordinator (AC) supports the instructional staff on each of the Summer Studies Program campuses. He or she helps Instructors and Teaching Assistants with students who are experiencing academic difficulties or who have special needs. He or she also regularly observes classes and assists instructors with requests for supplies and with field trip preparations.
- Residence Life Coordinator: A Residence Life Coordinator (RLC) assists the On-site Director with daily program operations by directly supervising the Residence Hall Leaders, Residential Counselors, and Program Assistants. The Residence Life Coordinator coordinates the organization of student housing, leads residential staff training sessions, organizes weekly and daily duty schedules, and coordinates the planning of social and recreational activities for students.
- Operations Coordinator: An Operations Coordinator manages administrative duties and organizes the program on-site office at each of the Summer Studies Program campuses.
- Office Assistant: Office Assistants (OA) provide support and assistance to Operations Coordinators at each of the Summer Studies Program campuses. Duties are primarily clerical and administrative.
- Psychological Counselor: A Psychological Counselor supports the staff by providing assistance for students who are experiencing social, emotional, or academic difficulties. The Psychological Counselor is available 24 hours a day to assist with crisis situations but also leads sessions for staff training, organizes workshops and activities for students, and participates in meetings with students.
- Group Leader: The Group Leader for a Field Study or Institute is the chief administrator for the program and is responsible for smooth and efficient program operations. The Group Leader reports to the Coordinator of Educational Programs, coordinates housing, dining, disciplinary matters, program finances, and logistical coordination with host institutions/sites. The Group Leader serves as the main student supervisor during all non-class times. See separate job descriptions for Group Leader for Field Studies and On-site Coordinator for Institutes.
Residential Positions
- Residence Hall Leader: Residence Hall Leaders (RHLs) supervise the Residential Counselors (RCs) and organize student activities at each Summer Studies Program campus. Residence Hall Leaders also supervise a group of 12-16 students.
- Residential Counselor: Residential Counselors (RCs) supervise groups of 12-16 students, organize activities and serve as positive role models for participants in each Summer Studies Program and some Field Studies/Institutes (Filmmaking at Chapman University, Global Dialogues Institute, Leadership Institute, and Great Debates Institute).

Program Assistant (PA): Program Assistants (PA) assist with all residential aspects of the Summer Studies Program, but are especially concerned with programming and student activities. PAs work closely with other residential staff members to accomplish the overall mission of the program by attending to the safety, well-being, and enjoyment of program participants.
Instructional Positions
- Instructor: Instructors are responsible for creating and delivering challenging, appropriate, and stimulating course material for classes of 15-18 gifted students in the Summer Studies, Field Studies, and Institutes. - Teaching Assistant: Teaching Assistants (TAs) support classroom instruction and provide assistance to students in the Summer Studies, Field Studies, and Institutes. See separate job description for Teaching Assistant for Field Studies and Teaching Assistant for Institutes.
General Qualifications

- Residential Counselor and Office Assistant applicants must have completed at least one year in college by the time they begin work for Duke TIP in the summer.
- Teaching Assistant, Residence Hall Leader, and Operations Coordinator applicants must have completed at least two years in college by the time they begin work for Duke TIP in the summer.
- Instructor applicants must have completed college and at least one year of graduate school or classroom teaching by the time they begin work for Duke TIP in the summer.
- On-Site Director and Residence Life Coordinator applicants must have completed college and are usually returning staff, but we will also consider highly qualified applicants with excellent experience in residential life.
- Academic Coordinator applicants must have a Bachelor's Degree. Significant graduate coursework and/or classroom experience are also required. A Master's Degree in Education or related field is strongly preferred.
- Psychological Counselor applicants must have a Master's Degree, with graduate work in the field of clinical psychology or counseling experience strongly preferred. Experience with gifted students is helpful.
These are minimum education requirements and may vary for the Field Studies and Institutes. Duke TIP welcomes applications from college upperclassmen or graduate students for residential or Teaching Assistant positions, as well as Instructor candidates who hold a Ph.D. or Ed.D.
Duke TIP prefers to hire staff for two sessions during the summer. Duke TIP policy does not allow staff members to enroll in summer session courses or hold other jobs during the period of employment.
