New Scholarship for Cumberland County Gifted Students
Jan 10, 2006, Durham, NC—A new scholarship fund for academically talented 7th and 8th graders in Cumberland County will provide need-based tuition grants to attend Duke TIP programs this summer. The Duke University Talent Identification Program (Duke TIP) received a $10,000 grant in December to fund these scholarships from the Harry Louis Yanoff and Jeannette Master Yanoff Charitable Fund, a donor advised endowment fund managed by the Cumberland Community Foundation (CCF).
The scholarships will help students participate in Duke TIP’s 3-week long summer residential programs. Held on the campuses of Duke University, Appalachian State, Davidson College, Texas A & M and the University of Kansas, these academically rigorous, socially enriching programs allow intellectually curious students the opportunity to explore new or advanced courses, meet new friends and expand their educational horizons.
“Duke TIP is thrilled about this new scholarship fund. We are excited to be able to provide these educational opportunities to gifted Cumberland County students as a result of the generosity of this donor advised fund of the Cumberland Community Foundation,” says Deborah-Kay Hughes, Director of Development for Duke TIP.
To apply for the scholarships, students must live in Cumberland County, must qualify for the Duke TIP Summer Programs (see Web site for specific qualification criteria), and must demonstrate significant financial need. “This grant will be used to make the Duke TIP experience available to gifted students who would not otherwise be able to attend due to their financial circumstances,” says Mary Holmes, Executive Director of Cumberland Community Foundation.
Duke TIP will work with Cumberland County school personnel to identify qualified recipients. For more information about qualifying for this new Duke TIP scholarship fund, please contact Judy Hammes at Duke TIP at (919) 668-9112 or jhammes@tip.duke.edu.
