April 2007

Gray SymonDURHAM, N.C. -- Duke TIP is pleased to announce that Gray Symon received a scholarship to one Duke TIP Summer Studies session or one e-Studies course in 2007 or 2008 in recognition of his outstanding achievement as the 2007 North Carolina State MATHCOUNTS Individual Champion. The competition was held in March at the North Carolina School of Science and Math. Gray attends Smith Middle School in Carrboro, North Carolina, and is enrolled in the Duke TIP 7th Grade Talent Search, in which he received Grand Level recognition for his outstanding scores on the SAT Reasoning Test.

Duke TIP is partnering with the Professional Engineers of North Carolina and MATHCOUNTS to honor and develop academic excellence. “MATHCOUNTS has been successfully promoting mathematics in middle schools across the nation for over 22 years,” states Dr. Martha Putallaz, Duke TIP Executive Director. “This partnership is a natural alliance between two organizations with similar missions that focus on the intellectual development of academically gifted youth. MATHCOUNTS has a strong reputation in our home state and we are pleased to be working with David Phipps, PE and such a fine organization.”

The Center for Summer Studies is an advanced academic program for gifted 7th-10th graders offering courses across the liberal arts curriculum. E-Studies offers similar accelerated learning opportunities via the Internet during summer, fall, and spring terms.

Duke TIP identifies and supports academically talented students in sixteen states in the South and Midwest. Since 1980 nearly 1.8 million students have been served by Duke TIP. A non-profit educational organization, Duke TIP is sustained by program fees and donations from individuals, corporations and foundations.
