Online course responds to the needs of gifted students

Updated: April 22, 2009

Durham, N.C.  — In an effort to serve gifted students with the best of higher-level learning, the Duke University Talent Identification Program (TIP) recently released an Algebra 1 online course, offering students in many different educational settings a chance to learn mathematics from their home or classroom computers.

Duke TIP’s Algebra 1 online course is an interactive, self-paced honors-level course for students in grades 7 through 9 that offers independence, interactivity and more. The course:

  • provides 24-7 access to asynchronous, self-paced learning.
  • allows student-centered, individualized choices.
  • addresses a variety of learning modalities, such as linguistic, visual/spatial, logical/mathematical, kinesthetic, interpersonal, intrapersonal and auditory.
  • provides access to Plato Learning System’s rich, multimedia Web resources and research materials (animated lectures, an online textbook, real-time feedback on problems, and additional practice problems).

The differentiated instruction that this course provides is especially beneficial to mathematics students who need diagnostic pretesting, individualized practice problems at their readiness level and self-paced learning. Students, teachers and parents can explore a sample lesson of Duke TIP’s Algebra 1 online course.
