DURHAM, N.C—This past summer, Duke TIP welcomed over 2,800 students to our Summer Studies Programs at nine campuses around the country. 2009 was a momentous year for us, as we added two new sites, Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, and the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia.

Duke TIP Marine LabAs families familiar with Duke TIP know, our summer programs offer three weeks of intensive study for students in grades 7-10. Our goal has always been to provide the most challenging academic experience for our gifted students, and with the addition of these two new sites, we were able to create 7–8 grade and 8–10 grade-only sites. From an academic perspective, this new structure provided innumerable positive benefits. Our younger students engaged in more inclusive peer-based discussions, our instructors developed more age-appropriate curriculum, and our older students found even greater freedom to explore advanced concepts. Socially, this change allowed both our 8th grade as well as our 10th grade students to embrace leadership roles, depending on which campus they and their families felt was best for them.

One student described his 2009 Duke TIP summer experience: “The people, the class, the maturity you experience really can change you.  It’s an amazing experience that I wouldn’t trade for anything. A year is three weeks of TIP and 49 weeks of waiting.”

Duke TIP at Davidson We’re pleased to announce that you need not wait any further for 2010 dates! Preparations are already underway in earnest for next summer, when we will add a second term at Trinity University and expand course offerings at the University of Georgia.  Look for a list of full course descriptions available on our website December 1.

We look forward to seeing you next summer!
