Scholar Weekends at Duke University
Challenging Students Academically in a College Atmosphere
Duke TIP Scholar Weekends provide opportunities for academically talented students in grades 8-11 to take short courses during weekend-long programs at Duke University.
Courses introduce topics that might not be available in students' local schools, delve into a specific subject with great detail, increase skills and help students consider options for college majors and careers. In addition, Scholar Weekends provide an opportunity for participants to meet similarly motivated peers.
Program Basics
- Open to all 8th-11th graders who have participated in a Duke TIP Talent Search or have been identified as academically gifted/talented by local school criteria.
- Scholar Weekend participants meet on Duke University's East Campus for two days of intensive academic study.
- Students enroll in one course to explore material typically not included in school curricula.
- The weekend fee of $450 ($400 for day students) covers housing, meals and academic activities.
- Overnight students stay at the Hilton Durham, supervised by Duke TIP Residential Counselors.
Weekend Schedule
Students and parents check in Saturday between 9:00 and 10:00 a.m. Parents may leave once class begins at 10:00. Overnight students leave campus Saturday evening at 8:30 p.m. to stay at the Hilton Durham. Parents may attend the closing meeting on Sunday afternoon at 4:15 p.m.; students leave at 4:30 p.m. A complete itinerary will be mailed to each student upon acceptance to a Scholar Weekend.

- This non-refundable application fee is not applied towards the course fee.
- Participants will be placed on a first-come, first-served basis in the highest ranked open course selected. Scholar Weekend courses are popular and fill quickly. Applicants unable to be placed in any course choices will be placed on a waiting list.
- Upon acceptance, additional information about the weekend will be mailed.
- Full program fee payment is due within ten days of acceptance into a course or the student's program slot may be offered to another student. If your child is unable to attend, Duke TIP must be notified immediately.
- All participants must be covered by health insurance. Information on short-term health insurance will be included in the acceptance packet.
Financial Aid
Financial aid is available on a first-come, first-served basis to families who demonstrate need. Each student may receive financial aid for only one Scholar Weekend course during the academic year. To apply for financial aid, submit your application with a copy of your family's 2007 or 2008 Federal Income Tax Return (1040) and all applicable schedules. Upon notification of a financial aid award, you must send payment for any balance owed within ten days or your financial aid and program slot may be offered to another student.
Cancellation Policy
Cancellations must be made at least ten business days prior to the beginning of the program; you must notify Duke TIP at (919) 668-9100 by 4:30 p.m. on February 13 (for the February 28-March 1 program) or by 4:30 p.m. on March 13 (for the March 28-29 program) to ensure a full refund. After that time, cancellations will result in forfeiture of payment except in cases of illness (with doctor's note on letterhead), death of immediate family member or inclement weather. Refunds usually take three weeks to process.
