Scholar Weekends

Allowing students to be challenged academically while experiencing a taste of life in a college setting.

Duke TIP Scholar Weekends provide opportunities for academically talented students in grades 8-11 (some sites extend the opportunity to 12th graders) to take short courses during weekend-long programs at a college or university. To be eligible, students must have participated in the Duke TIP talent search or been identified as academically gifted/talented by local school criteria. Courses introduce topics that might not be available in students’ local schools. They provide enrichment, sharpen skills, and help students define pathways to college majors and careers. In addition, they provide a glimpse into the collegiate experience and an opportunity for students to interact with similarly motivated students. Previously, courses have been offered in law, philosophy, business, environmental issues, medicine, writing, and drama. The program is not intended to provide high school or college credit.

Duke TIP Scholar Weekends are held on the college or university campus and are designed for students within driving distance of the campus. If students from outside this range would like to attend a Scholar Weekend, Duke TIP staff are not responsible for travel arrangements, transportation to and from the airport, and/or accommodations before or after the program. If a student from outside this range chooses to attend a Scholar Weekend, Duke TIP highly recommends that the child’s parents stay in the local area for the weekend.
