Visit Durham

Thank you for your interest; all Scholar Weekend courses at Duke University are full.

As a 7th Grade Talent Search participant, you are eligible to attend any of Duke TIP’s Scholar Weekends. Why not travel to Durham and make a weekend of it? From the Duke University campus, to downtown Durham, and out to Raleigh and Chapel Hill, the area has something to offer everyone in the family. Here are some useful links to help you navigate travel plans.

Hotels and Travel

Duke University’s Visit Duke page offers helpful information and links to accommodations ideas, restaurants and other attractions in Durham.  Also, the Durham Visitors Bureau has great ideas on places to stay, as well as things to see and do. Note: Students wishing to attend a Scholar Weekend program who live outside of driving distance to the Duke Campus should wait to receive course placement notification prior to purchasing airline tickets. Duke TIP does not provide transportation to or from the airport.

Flights

Major travel sites like Expedia and Orbitz are good places to look for flights. The closest airport to Duke University is Raleigh-Durham Airport (airport code RDU), which is also serviced by discount airlines like Southwest and JetBlue.

Touring the Campus

Stroll along Duke’s picturesque campus and enjoy the Georgian architecture of East campus or the Gothic wonderland of West campus, which boasts the beautiful Duke Chapel. Other campus sites to enjoy include

Exploring Greater Durham

Move beyond the campus to take advantage of all Durham has to offer. Hike along the Eno River, see a show at the Durham Performing Arts Center, visit the Museum of Life and Science or just relax and go shopping at one of the area malls such as The Streets at Southpoint. Restaurants

See why Bon Appetit calls Durham “America’s Foodiest Small Town” and visit highlights such as Parker and Otis, Nana’s, the famous Magnolia Grill, or local favorite, Parizade.  Head to nearby Locopops for a unique popsicle you’ll never forget.   

Historical activities

Visit Bennett Place, where Union and Confederate generals signed the papers for the largest troop surrender in the Civil War.  Or check out Duke Homestead, the farm where Washington Duke first grew tobacco.

Sports

Witness Duke football in action!  On October 10, Duke takes on NC State in Raleigh. On November 14, Duke matches up against Georgia Tech at home.  Purchase tickets or check out other sporting events at GoDuke.com

Venture further to Chapel Hill or Raleigh 

From Crook’s Corner to A Southern Season in Chapel Hill and the North Carolina Museum of Art to the 42nd Street Oyster Bar and Seafood Grill in Raleigh, the area known as the Triangle has virtually inexhaustible options for entertainment, food and shopping.
