Applying to e-Studies – A Step-by-Step Guide

Using the Online Application

The online application is an easy, convenient, and secure way to apply to Duke TIP’s e-Studies Program. In order to use the online application, you must pay the nonrefundable $25.00 application fee online using a MasterCard or Visa.

In some cases, you will need to submit supplemental materials via mail or fax to complete your application. If you

  • are applying for financial aid, and/or
  • you are applying for a course with prerequisites (e.g. Mathematical Problem Solving), and/or
  • you did not participate in Duke TIP’s 7th Grade Talent Search and do not have a Duke TIP ID number,

then you will need to download and complete the Supplemental Materials Cover Sheet. Please return the completed form, along will all required supplemental materials, to Duke TIP no later than April 25, 2008. Your application will be considered incomplete and cannot be processed until all supplemental materials, including the cover sheet, have been received. Submit all materials by mail to Duke University TIP, e-Studies, 1121 W. Main Street, Durham, NC 27701 or by fax to (919) 681-4182.

Please note that, in the event that you submit an online application but do not submit the supplemental materials needed to complete your application by the deadline above, Duke TIP will not refund the $25.00 application fee.

  • Verify that you meet the admissions criteria for the course(s) you have selected?

How and when will my application be processed?

Duke TIP staff will review applications on a rolling basis, as they are received, so it's important that you submit your completed application as soon as possible. Duke TIP will not process applications that are incomplete.

If you are using the online application, be sure that you complete and submit the Supplemental Materials Cover Sheet, along with financial aid materials and documentation of successful completion of prerequisites, via mail or fax if applicable.

If you are submitting the paper application, please include all parts of the application, including financial aid materials and documentation of successful completion of prerequisites if applicable, in one envelope. See the application checklists to ensure you have included all required materials.

When will I find out if I have been accepted into the e-Studies Program?

You will be notified by mail of a program acceptance decision and course placement no later than May 2, 2008. If applicable, you will also be notified of a financial aid decision at this time. Upon acceptance into the e-Studies Program, you will receive periodic e-mails with additional information about the program and the course, so be sure that the student and parent e-mail addresses that you provide on your application are accurate. If you use spam-blocking software, be sure to add admissions@tip.duke.edu and e-studies@tip.duke.edu to your list of known, safe e-mail addresses to ensure that you receive important information from Duke TIP. You will receive your textbooks and other course materials via FedEx approximately one week before the first day of online orientation.

Fees and Payments

  • A nonrefundable application fee of $25.00 is required with every application.
  • To use the online application, you must pay the application fee online using a credit card (MasterCard or Visa).
  • If you are submitting a paper application, the application fee should be submitted by check or money order payable to Duke University, or by credit card (MasterCard or Visa). To pay by credit card, submit the Credit Card Payment Form (downloadable with the paper application) along with all application materials. Please do NOT send course fees with the application.
  • Course fees, which include all textbooks and course materials, are due upon acceptance of placement in an e-Studies course. As with the application fee, course fees should be submitted by check or money order payable to Duke University, or by credit card (MasterCard or Visa). A Credit Card Payment Form for use in paying course fees will accompany notification of a student's placement in an e-Studies course.
  • Final payment in full of the balance of course fees, less any financial aid awards, must be received by May 16, 2008. If Duke TIP has not received final payment by this date, the student may be dropped from the course.

All payments must be made in U.S. dollars, and checks must be drawn on a U.S. bank. Paying by check authorizes Duke University to make a one-time electronic fund transfer from your account. If we do, funds may be withdrawn from your account as soon as the day we receive your payment, and your canceled check will be destroyed. Whether or not processed electronically, checks returned because of insufficient funds or closed accounts will cause you to be responsible for a $25.00 processing charge.

Refund Policy

  • The $25.00 application fee will not be refunded under any circumstances.
  • A refund in the amount of 50% of course fees paid will be issued if the student's parent/guardian notifies Duke TIP of the student's intention to withdraw from the course during the first two weeks (fall and spring terms) or first week (summer term) of class (excluding orientation week).
  • No refund will be issued for a student who withdraws from or fails to participate in an e-Studies course after the first two weeks (fall and spring terms) or first week (summer term) of the course.
  • If a student is dismissed from the e-Studies Program by Duke TIP for violating the policies and/or code of conduct, no monies will be refunded.
