Welcome International Students!
Duke TIP’s e-Studies Program gives international students a unique opportunity to connect with gifted students all over the world—students who share your academic talents and interests.
On this page, you will find information about applying to the e-Studies Program as an international student. Please note that English proficiency is very important for e-Studies students. All course materials, instructions, and communication are in English, and Duke TIP does not provide English language support.
You should also note that the application process for international students is slightly different from the process for domestic students, so it is very important that you read the information on this page carefully.- Applying to e-Studies: A Step-by-Step Guide for International Students

Include your completed School Recommendation form if you do not have SAT or ACT scores? - Include an e-mail address? Duke TIP expects that e-Studies students and parents will check their e-mail accounts frequently. Be sure to adjust your security settings so that you can receive e-mail from addresses that end in "tip.duke.edu."

How and when will my application be processed?
Duke TIP staff will review applications on a rolling basis, as they are received, so it's important that you submit your completed application as soon as possible. Duke TIP will not process applications that are incomplete.
Please include all parts of the application, including the School Recommendation form and documentation of successful completion of prerequisites if applicable, in one envelope. See the application checklist to ensure you have included all required materials.
When will I find out if I've been accepted into the e-Studies Program?
You will be notified by e-mail of a program acceptance decision and course placement no later than December 8, 2009. Since we will be communicating program placement decisions by e-mail, it is very important that both the student and parent e-mail addresses on the application are reliable and are entered accurately on the application. If you use spam-blocking software, be sure to add admissions@tip.duke.edu and e-studies@tip.duke.edu to your list of known, safe e-mail addresses to ensure that you receive this and other important information from Duke TIP. Upon acceptance into the e-Studies Program, you will receive periodic e-mails with additional information about the program and the course. You will receive your textbooks and other course materials via FedEx approximately one week before the first day of online orientation.
Fees and Payments
- A nonrefundable application fee of $25.00 is required with every application.
- The application fee should be submitted by credit card (MasterCard or Visa) or by check or money order payable to Duke University. NOTE: All check payments must be drawn on a U.S. Bank. To pay by credit card, submit the Credit Card Payment Form (downloadable with the paper application) along with all application materials. Please do NOT send course fees with the application.
- Course fees, which include all textbooks and course materials, are due upon acceptance of placement in an e-Studies course. As with the application fee, course fees should be submitted by credit card (MasterCard or Visa) or by check or money order payable to Duke University. A Credit Card Payment Form for use in paying course fees will accompany notification of a student's placement in an e-Studies course.
- Final payment in full of the balance of course fees, less any financial aid awards, must be received by December 11, 2009. If Duke TIP has not received final payment by this date, the student may be dropped from the course.
All payments must be made in U.S. dollars, and checks must be drawn on a U.S. bank. Paying by check authorizes Duke University to make a one-time electronic fund transfer from your account. If we do, funds may be withdrawn from your account as soon as the day we receive your payment, and your canceled check will be destroyed. Whether or not processed electronically, checks returned because of insufficient funds or closed accounts will cause you to be responsible for a $25.00 processing charge.
Refund Policy
- The $25.00 application fee will not be refunded under any circumstances.
- A refund in the amount of 50% of course fees paid will be issued if the student's parent/guardian notifies Duke TIP of the student's intention to withdraw from the course during the first two weeks (fall and spring terms) or first week (summer term) of class (excluding orientation week).
- No refund will be issued for a student who withdraws from or fails to participate in an e-Studies course after the first two weeks (fall and spring terms) or first week (summer term) of the course.
- If a student is dismissed from the e-Studies Program by Duke TIP for violating the policies and/or code of conduct, no monies will be refunded.
