TIPs for Success: Parents/Guardians
Support at home is a vital part of an e-Studies student’s success. Before submitting an e-Studies application, we encourage you to talk honestly with your child about his or her:
- schedule, including academic and extracurricular commitments;
- knowledge of and comfort level with the computer;
- regular and consistent access to a computer; and
- responses to the “ Is an e-Studies course right for me” statements.
Once a student is accepted into the program and class begins, you can provide support by:
- Making sure your child logs on during Orientation Week to meet his/her instructor and classmates and to explore the course Web site.
- Checking your e-mail account regularly and encouraging your child to do the same.
- Recognizing that it may take your child a week or two to get acclimated to an e-learning environment, and encouraging him/her to stay engaged and to seek help when needed.
- Asking to see weekly calendars of assignments and asking when assignments are due.
- Discussing with your child what he or she is learning and asking to see course materials that interest your child.
- Asking your child how communication with the instructor is progressing, and reminding your child to contact the instructor regularly, particularly if he or she has questions.
- Logging on and exploring the course Web site yourself. You will receive guest access instructions near the beginning of the term.
