TIPs for Success: Students

To be successful in an e-Studies course, it’s important for you to know what to expect and what Duke TIP expects of you.

Take the Challenge

E-Studies courses are designed to challenge and engage gifted students. Therefore you should enjoy rigorous content, an accelerated pace, and engaging activities—the type of learning you would encounter in an advanced high-school or a first-year college course.

These courses are not solo endeavors. Each week, you will have numerous opportunities to connect with your instructor and with other gifted students. In e-mails, “real-time” chats, and discussion boards, you will be challenged to think deeply, broadly, and “outside the box.”

IInvest the Time

You must be willing to invest significant time and effort in an e-Studies course. During fall and spring terms, students typically devote 5-7 hours per week to the course, so if you juggle a rigorous schedule in your regular school and/or numerous extracurricular commitments, you may wish to consider a summer e-Studies course.

In addition, you should be able to log on more than one or two times a week. Connecting regularly with your instructor and other students is key to your success. Spread your five to seven hours as evenly as your schedule allows throughout the week.

Put Your Best Foot Forward

Your participation should demonstrate that you are self-motivated, able to work well independently, and willing to try new experiences. To learn more, go to "Is an e-Studies course right for me? "
