Course/Unit Development Process
- Submission of Course/Unit Proposal

- Acceptance: contract and planning meeting. The position is a part-time, short-term position without benefits, and a course or unit developer can be employed elsewhere during the course development process.
- SoftChalk LessonBuilder training (for developers using CD-ROM format)
- Complete syllabus and first lesson due in document format, including recommended course readers, texts, and other supplementary readings
- Lessons due in SoftChalk LessonBuilder (2-5 submissions, depending on length and breadth of curriculum as well as the developer's and Duke TIP's schedule) with ongoing review of each lesson and requests for revisions by the Coordinator of Independent Learning and/or Duke TIP editors (a content editor and a copy editor); and Image and illustrations recommendations due. You also create mentor guidelines, answer keys, and rubrics, some of which are posted on a separate Web site just for mentors.

- Field test review by Duke TIP students (learn more about the TIP Tester Program)
- Further revisions and mentor guidelines due
- Illustrations and graphics approved (Duke TIP works with developer to plan illustrations and graphics and will compensate illustrators or purchase certain images for the project on a case-by-case basis of the budget. The developer must seek permissions for copyrighted images. Duke TIP has a limited budget for images but is open to ideas and suggestions).
Compensation occurs in several stages with the completion of various steps of the process.
Development can take three to twelve months, depending on the length of the course/unit, curriculum specifications, revisions necessary, and developer's and Duke TIP's schedule.
Duke TIP is accommodating of the schedules of practicing teachers.
