Enrollment
Students are eligible to enroll when they are in the fourth or fifth grade. If a student previously enrolled as a fourth grader, they do not enroll again. The non-refundable enrollment fee for 2012 is $35. This fee covers all publications and exclusive online benefits through the student's sixth grade year.
Students must score in the 95th percentile or higher on a grade-level standardized achievement test, aptitude test, mental-ability test, approved state criterion-referenced test, or 125 or above on an IQ test.
One of the two most recent administrations is acceptable for qualification. For most fourth grade students this represents scores from either the third grade or the second grade. For fifth grade students this would represent scores from either the fourth grade or the third grade.
Determine your qualifying test and score
Can't find your qualifying test? Mark "Other" on your online application or send an email to qtest45@tip.duke.edu to see if your test is accepted.
If a student is home-schooled they will be able to choose the appropriate code when completing the school information section of the online application.
Note: Mental-ability tests must be no more than two years old. Only one approved subtest-area qualifying score is needed. The online application will accept ONLY ONE SCORE.
Students without a qualifying test score:
There are times when students who would benefit from Talent Search participation are excluded due to situations such as unexpected problems with state-mandated testing or testing eligibility criteria. Please check with your school counselor to inquire about a "coordinator's recommendation."
Before you enroll:
Look up your school's Duke TIP ID and set it aside for use on your 4th/5th Grade Talent Search application. Don't worry if your school is not listed; just manually fill in your school's name and address on the application.
