International Students
International Students are defined as students living outside of the United States the majority of the year. This may include U.S. Citizens or non-U.S. Citizens. We are pleased to be serving more and more of the academically gifted international student population and encourage international students to apply early as the programs fill up quickly.

Insurance Information
All Duke TIP participants are required to be covered by medical insurance for the duration of the program. Duke TIP does not endorse or recommend any particular insurance agency or company, but we can refer you to a Durham, NC insurance agent who can assist you in securing a short-term policy if your child is without coverage. The cost of coverage will vary depending upon your state of residence and the deductible you choose.
Non-U.S. citizens must purchase the Gateway Insurance Plan or a comparable, U.S.-based health insurance plan. For more information about this short-term coverage, contact:
U.S. Citizens: | Non-U.S. Citizens: |
|---|---|
Hill, Chesson & Woody | Gateway Insurance Administrator |
Note: Short-term insurance, such as the Gateway Insurance plan, often does not cover pre-existing conditions. Therefore, send a copy of any other health insurance you may carry. We require a U.S.-based policy to facilitate access to healthcare as necessary because travel insurance policies do not provide appropriate coverage.
Coverage may be obtained 30 days before start of program; send verification of coverage to Duke TIP three weeks before start of program. Fax to TIP admissions office at (919) 684-0221.
The insurance application and payment should be submitted directly to the insurance company and not to Duke TIP. Verification of short-term policy on the insurance company's letterhead MUST be sent to Duke TIP.
Visa Information
Non-U.S. students are required to have the appropriate visa. Allow a minimum of six weeks after obtaining a passport to complete this process. The only international program at this time that requires that students obtain a visa is the Field Study in China. Duke TIP will work in conjunction with students in obtaining this visa. A minimum of six weeks is needed to complete this process. Additional information will be provided upon admission.
Passport Information
- All non-U.S. students will require a passport to attend summer programs in the United States.
- All international programs require that participants have a passport. The passport must be valid for a minimum of six months after the completion of the program. Due to the lengthy process of obtaining a passport, please allow a minimum of six to eight weeks to obtain a passport. Students enrolled in the China program will need an additional six to eight weeks to obtain the visa after receiving their passport.
International Student Identity Card (ISIC)
Along with a passport, Duke TIP requires that each student attending an International Field Study program purchase an International Student Identity Card (ISIC). More information on the ISIC can be found at www.isic.org.
Vaccination Information
At this time, Duke TIP does not require that students obtain any additional vaccinations (other than those required on the Duke TIP medical form that student's receives upon admission to the program). For programs located in int ernational locations, Duke TIP highly recommends that students and parents consult their family physician or a travel clinic about recommendations they might have regarding healthcare while traveling. In addition, we suggest that students and parents consult the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Web site for more information regarding travel to other countries. For more information, visit the "Travelers' Health" section of the Centers for Disease Control Web site.
Arrival and Departure information
Students traveling on International Field Studies must travel from a pre-selected gateway airport with the group. International students attending Institutes and U.S.-based Field Studies must not arrive prior to the first day of the program. If you cannot arrange a flight for arrival and/or departure day, you may arrive up to 24 hours late and/or depart early from the program.
