Application Process
Step 1: Identify and rank course offerings
- Review the course descriptions, and identify several courses that you would be willing to take. Rank your choices from most preferred to least preferred. Although you may rank multiple courses on your application, you will only be enrolled in one course for the entire term.
- Only rank courses in which you would be willing to accept placement.
- If your first choice is unavailable, you will be placed in your next highest-ranked available option. Listing only one course does not increase your chances of being placed in the course, nor does listing multiple courses decrease your chances of being placed in your first choice.
- Check your choices for prerequisites.
Step 2: Apply online or download and complete a paper application
Duke TIP is not responsible for mail that is delayed in transit; students are strongly encouraged to apply online.

Frequently Asked Questions
How and when will my application be processed?
- Duke TIP staff will review applications on a rolling basis, as they are received, so it's important that you submit your completed application as soon as possible. Duke TIP will not process applications that are incomplete.
- Course space is limited and classes fill quickly, so please return application materials promptly. Do not wait until the deadline to submit your application as program spots may be full by that time; however, Duke TIP will continue to accept applications after the deadline if space is available.
How and when will I find out if I have been accepted?
- Once registration begins, you be notified of acceptance decisions and course placement by email within two weeks. If applicable, you will also be notified of a financial aid decision at this time. The email will also contain instructions regarding acceptance and payment. You will receive your textbooks and other course materials via FedEx approximately one week before the first day of online orientation.
- Because courses fill quickly, submitting an application does not guarantee placement in a course. If all of your ranked courses are full, you will be placed on a waiting list and notified by email.
- Duke TIP maintains a waitlist to fill course spaces that are vacated by students who decline their placement. If a space opens in any of your ranked choices that can be offered to you, a Duke TIP admissions officer will contact you to offer placement. Once students are placed in a course, they are removed from any other waitlists.
What are the costs?
- Program costs, as well as the refund policy, are available on the Dates and Fees page.
Is there financial aid available?
- Yes. Duke TIP offers limited need-based financial aid for eStudies.
