State Definitions of Gifted—Alabama
State definition: Gifted students are those who perform at high levels in academic or creative fields when compared to others of their age, experience, or environment. These students require services not ordinarily provided by the regular school program. Students possessing these abilities can be found in all populations, across all economic strata, and in all areas of human endeavor.
- A state mandate without funding exists for identification and programming in gifted education (See Law 16-39-1 Alabama Exceptional Children Act, 1971 No. 106 p. 373)
- A child can be referred at any time. There is a mandatory second grade screening where every child is observed as a potential gifted referral.
