State Definitions of Gifted—Missouri
State definition: Those children who exhibit precocious development of mental capacity and learning potential as determined by competent professional evaluation to the extent that continued educational growth and stimulation could best be served by an academic environment beyond that offered through a standard grade level curriculum (Section 162.675, RSMo )
- Gifted legislation does exist ( H.B. Section 162.675 RSMo, Section 162.720 RSMo, and Section 162.975 RSMo) ; however, there is no state mandate for gifted programming or identification. Funding is available. Note: For 2003-2004, Missouri changed the term "Gifted and Talented" to "Advanced and Accelerated.”
- Children are identified anytime from K-12 grades.
