Summer Programs

Duke TIP Summer Studies Programs, Domestic Field Studies, and Scholar Exchanges are full. The Institute of Computational Science and International Field Studies in China and Italy have limited availability.

Summer Studies Program

Duke TIP Summer Studies Programs offer students in grades 7-10 the opportunity to learn highly challenging material at a rate suited to their advanced abilities. Students enroll in a single Duke TIP-designed course for three weeks of in-depth study; they attend nearly 40 hours of class each week between Monday morning and Saturday afternoon.

Programs are offered on a variety of college campuses, providing an unparalleled opportunity for young scholars to experience college classroom instruction and residence hall living. Classes have approximately 16 to 18 students and are taught by highly qualified Instructor-Teaching Assistant teams. Outside the classroom, a carefully selected residential staff supervises students during meals, free time, and social and recreational activities. In general, Duke TIP Summer Studies Programs are divided by admissions criteria into the Academy for Summer Studies and the Center for Summer Studies. View Required Score Criteria for each respective program. See table below for 2008 program dates.

While participation in Duke TIP fosters intellectual, social, and emotional growth, it is important to recognize that students’ genuine academic motivation is at the heart of the program. Students not willing to rise to this intellectual challenge or those primarily interested in a “summer camp experience” should refrain from applying to Duke TIP. The truly motivated student, however, will enjoy a stimulating environment and a community of peers unlike any she or he has ever experienced.

Field Studies

Duke University TIP offers challenging adventures in science and humanities for motivated, dedicated, and talented 9-12 grade students with a desire to learn in a unique setting. Each Domestic and International Field Study involves travel to an exciting location that is ideal for research and creative exploration. Approximately twenty to twenty-five students* are selected to participate in each Field Study. Each program has a minimum of three staff members who remain with the students throughout the entire course. The combination of small classes, academic enthusiasm of staff, and the unique on-site opportunities for students serve to make each Field Study one of the best experiential learning adventures available to high school students. Student application includes essay, résumé, transcript, recommendation, and test scores. See table below for 2008 program dates.

*Up to thirty-two students are selected for Filmmaking.

Institutes

The Duke TIP Institutes are Duke University-based programs developed for the motivated high school student (grade 9-12) wishing to gain real world experience. The Duke TIP Leadership Institute allows students to discover their own leadership potential through study, discussion, and service experience; the Duke TIP Pre-Law Institute will give students a meaningful introduction to the workings of the U.S. criminal justice system; and the Duke TIP Institute of Computational Science will introduce students to the world of computational science. Students participating in the institutes will benefit from an exceptional instructional staff and relevant hands-on projects. Student application includes essay, transcript, recommendation, and test scores. See table below for 2008 program dates.
