Admissions and Application Procedures

How to Apply for a Summer Studies Program

1. Determine your eligibility

The Summer Studies Program is open to all students who qualify, based on their SAT or ACT scores, regardless of whether the test was taken as a part of Duke TIP’s Talent Search or another talent search. The Summer Studies Program score tables will help you determine whether you are eligible for Academy or Center courses. If you were a participant in the 7th grade Talent Search, you may also check your mailing label for this information. If you did not participate in the 7th grade Talent Search, or if you retested to meet a specific program or course requirement, please submit your most recent SAT or ACT score report along with your application.

All Academy courses have the same eligibility score criteria. If you are qualified to attend a program site in the Academy, you may choose any Academy course that interests you. Math sequence courses have course prerequisites, so be sure you have taken the prerequisite courses in school or at previous Duke TIP programs before you apply for a math sequence course. For Academy for Summer Studies information click here.

All Center courses have special eligibility score criteria—to be placed in a particular class, you must meet the criteria listed for that class. Each course description makes reference to a Course Eligibility Score Table; when choosing a course that interests you, please refer to the Center Course Eligibility Score tables here to make sure that you are eligible for your preferred course. For Center for Summer Studies information click here.

2. Make your course selection(s)

Browse the course descriptions and note the ones that you are interested in taking. On the application, you will be asked to rank these choices from most preferred to least preferred. You will only be enrolled in one course for the entire three-week term.

Duke TIP will make every effort to place you in your most preferred course, but admission to these programs is highly competitive. The more choices you indicate, the more likely it is that you will be accepted to a Summer Studies Program. However, do not include a course in your rankings if you would not be willing to accept placement in that course. You may rank your overall course preferences without regard to term. You will still be placed in your highest-ranked open choice. It is up to you to make sure of your availability during either term. If you would like to attend two different terms this summer, you must complete the application process twice —that is, send in two separate application packets, complete with course choice form and application fee. However, Duke TIP does not allow students to attend two terms at the same site. Duke TIP cannot provide housing, programming, or supervision for students between terms. Students must plan to adhere to program arrival and departure schedules.

3. Fill out the application

A complete set of forms may be found at the end of this section. Do not submit your application packet until you have collected all of the required pieces. If the components of your application arrive separately, we will be unable to process your application. A completed application packet contains:

  • The appropriate Student Application (either Academy or Center, but not both), with Course Choice form on the reverse; Application must be an original form with signatures; faxed applications will not be accepted
  • Personal Statement, Participant’s Release and Agreement form on the reverse
  • $25.00 non-refundableapplication fee
  • Prerequisite documentation (if required for any of your course choices)
  • Financial Aid Application and required tax forms (if you are applying for need-based financial assistance)

4. If necessary, complete the application for financial aid

Financial aid is available for all Duke TIP Summer Studies Programs. However, funds are limited, so be sure to return your application promptly. To be considered for a financial aid award, a student’s family must complete a financial aid application and submit all required documentation.

Failure to submit complete documentation will exclude the student from placement and financial aid consideration. A financial aid application form can be found with the application. If you indicate on your student application that you are applying for financial aid, you must enclose your financial aid application in the same packet. Otherwise, your entire application will be considered incomplete and will not be processed.

Students are notified of financial aid decisions and program admissions decisions in a single mailing. Awards last year ranged from $500 to full tuition. Financial aid recipients will receive aid awards for only one term.

In addition to offering general need-based financial assistance, special Duke TIP endowments provide need-based aid to students from North Carolina, Native American students, and orthopedically challenged students. For further information on financial aid, contact the Duke TIP Financial Aid Office, Duke University, 1121 W. Main Street, Durham, NC 27701, (919) 668-9100.

5. Submit the application

You may send your application via US Mail, Federal Express, DHL, or UPS only. Since course placements are made upon receipt of a complete written application and the $25 course deposit/application fee, we will not accept applications by fax or e-mail.

Course Placement and Wait Lists

Applications will be processed on a rolling basis, as they are received. Because space in each course is limited, prompt return of application materials is a key factor in course placement. Within two weeks of receipt of your complete application package, you will be notified of program acceptance decisions and course placement. If you are accepted to the program, you will receive a packet containing acceptance forms, payment information, medical forms, and a Guide to Summer Studies with more details on the program. Please be sure to return all forms and submit payment in a timely fashion.

There are always more applicants than available places in classes. When courses are filled, additional applicants are automatically placed on a waiting list. Those students are notified of their status by mail and are given an opportunity to advise Duke TIP of other course choices they will accept. If a space opens in any of the courses you’ve listed, a Duke TIP Admissions Officer will call you immediately to offer placement in the course. Once students have been placed in a course, they are no longer on the waitlist for any other course. Please do not call the Duke TIP office to check on waitlist status.

Although approximately 50% of waitlisted students are eventually offered classes, the best way to avoid the waitlist is to return the application as soon as possible and to list all appealing course choices.

Fees and Deposit Payments

All applicants, including those applying for financial aid, must submit a $25.00 application fee. Application fees are non-refundable and are not applied to the course fee. Within two weeks of placement notification students must send a $300 non-refundable enrollment deposit in order to secure a place in the program. This deposit is applied to the course fee. If you receive a financial aid award, you may qualify for a reduced deposit amount. Your acceptance letter will provide details. Payment of remaining course fees must be paid in full by the deadlines listed below.

Application fee, deposit, and remaining course fee balances may be made by check, credit card, or money order. Paying by check authorizes Duke University to make a one-time electronic fund transfer from your account. If we do, funds may be withdrawn from your account as soon as the date of recepit and your canceled check will be destroyed.

All returned checks will result in a $25.00 processing charge.

Refund Policy

Application Fee

  • The $25.00 application fee will not be refunded under any circumstances.

Deposit

  • The course deposit will not be refunded under any circumstances once the course placement is accepted.

Program Fee

  • Program fees paid, less the deposit, will be refunded if Duke TIP is notified of the student’s withdrawal by March 31, 2008 (for 8th, 9th, and 10th graders) or May 1, 2008 (for 7th graders). If the student withdraws between that withdrawal deadline and the start of the program, TIP will return 50% of program fees paid.
  • Once the program has started, a student who withdraws due to death of a mother, father, guardian, or sibling or an illness that requires hospitalization will receive a prorated refund not to exceed 50% of program fees paid. If a student withdraws for any other reason after the program has started, or if a student is dismissed from the program, no monies will be refunded.
  • For all refund inquiries, please contact Duke TIP’s Finance Office, (919) 668-9100.

Special Note to Seventh Graders and their Parents

Because most seventh graders choose to take the SAT or ACT on a January or February test date, Duke TIP must mail Bulletins to qualifying seventh graders about two months after those sent to eighth, ninth, and tenth grade students. We compensate for this difference by holding separate application periods for seventh graders and by limiting the number of seats open to older students during their application period—that is, we save a significant number of spots in most courses so that seventh grade students will have a fair chance to apply for them. We also reserve an appropriate amount of financial aid funds for seventh grade applicants. The earlier mailing in no way grants an unfair advantage to students in upper grades.

Remember, too, that the program and courses at Duke TIP at Davidson and Duke TIP at Wake Forest are specially designed for Center-level seventh and eighth grade interests and requirements. Seventh graders who qualify for the Academy level are also eligible to apply for courses at Duke TIP at Texas A&M University, Duke TIP at Appalachian State University and Duke TIP at the University of Kansas. (Students should determine whether they qualify for Academy or Center sites.)

Duke TIP encourages all interested seventh graders to apply. Students at this grade level are an integral part of Duke TIP’s program, and we wish to provide the same level of service and equivalent opportunities for our younger students as we do for our older ones. If you have any questions or concerns about the appropriateness of a Duke TIP Summer Program for your seventh grader or about the ways in which Duke TIP strives to give seventh graders a fair and separate application period, please feel free to call the Director of Educational Programs, Hollace Selph, at (919) 668-9100.
