Melody of the Mind: An Analytical Approach to Music

Melody of the Mind will enable students to develop a lifelong appreciation of music. Hosted at New College of Florida, the Honors College of the State University System of Florida, and taught by both a composer and a music historian, the course will introduce students to music theory and composition. At the same time, students will explore music’s deep-seated connection with cultural history, philosophy, and aesthetics. Students will delve into cutting-edge research in the fields of cognition and neuroscience to understand why humans are so compelled to make music. Held in conjunction with the world-renowned Sarasota Music Festival, this field of study will offer students will have the opportunity to interact with professional musicians, witness the rehearsal process, and hear the final results at live concerts.

Note: Students do not need to know how to read music or play an instrument for this course.

"The Play's the Thing:" Shakespeare and the Theatrical Tradition

How has one playwright captured the world’s imagination for over 400 years? Shakespeare wrote his plays first and foremost for performance, and in this program theater-lovers and aspiring writers, thespians and directors will experience the magic of his comedies and dramas through stage performances. Based at the internationally renowned Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Ontario, Canada, students will immerse themselves in the world of Shakespeare as they study how the Bard’s great plays make the leap from page to stage.

A Writer's Art: Creative Writing

If good writing requires inspiration, concentration, and solitude, then Ghost Ranch, New Mexico is a writer’s paradise. Located in a high desert landscape, the ranch features canyons, red rock mesas, and an ever-changing variety of colorful sunsets. Artist Georgia O’Keeffe once said of Ghost Ranch, “All the earth colors of the painter’s palette are out there in the many miles of badlands.” This field study offers students the opportunity to enjoy two weeks of creative discovery in this serene and beautiful location.

Reel Expressions: Filmmaking

“Lights, Camera, Action!” Students explore the roles of writer, director, editor, and actor in this filmmaking experience. Students study at Chapman University, using new, state-of-the-art facilities in the Dodge College of Film and Media Arts. Each student enjoys the creative freedom to write, shoot, and edit at least two short films in collaboration with an engaged group of like-minded students, talented instructors, and film industry professionals.
