The Site

University of Durham, England, logoThe University of Durham, located in a beautiful and historic setting, is one of the leading universities in the United Kingdom. Founded in 1832, the university consists of fifteen different colleges and maintains the very highest standards in teaching and an international profile in research. The University of Durham secured the title of "UK University of the Year" in the Sunday Times 2005/06 Guide to UK Universities, and is consistently ranked in the UK top 10. At the heart of the University is Durham's Norman Cathedral and University College, the university's oldest college, which is located in Durham Castle. The Castle and Cathedral have been designated as a World Heritage site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), an honor that is shared with sites such as Machu Picchu, the ancient Egyptian Pyramids, and the Taj Mahal.

The Program

The University of Durham Summer School for Gifted and Talented Youth is based at Van Mildert College in Durham, England. This two week Summer School is designed to give exceptionally gifted and talented young people the opportunity to engage in academic activities to stretch both their abilities and imaginations. Admitted students enroll in one of seven different subject strands: Anthropology, Business & Economics, History, Law, Math, Physics, or Psychology. Program fees cover all course costs, full board and accommodation, social activities, and excursions.

International Travel

Duke TIP recommends that all students and staff members travel as a group from a gateway airport to Durham, England and back. Duke TIP will make every effort to assist participants in locating a flight that will allow them to fly with the group.

Academic Strands

Students can choose to participate in one of seven different courses, all of which are run by academic experts in their chosen field. Each course contains approximately 19 students and provides a supportive and stimulating environment that engages gifted students.
