The Course

Duke TIP’s mission for the Leadership Institute is to encourage students to deepen their commitments to service, philanthropy, and civic engagement, no matter where their academic or career paths may lead. This course will utilize the latest methodologies in leadership education to allow students to gain an understanding of leadership through accelerated classroom instruction and service-learning experiences in the community. Students will be challenged to discover their unique leadership skills through participation in class discussions, workshops, presentations, research assignments, and a ropes course. Learning activities include team building, community problem-solving, effective public speaking, conflict resolution, prioritizing, and strategic planning. Group building activities, including both physical and intellectual challenges, will encourage individuals to work together. Duke TIP’s interdisciplinary faculty of scholars and practitioners combine diverse methodologies to create a program of leadership that is innovative in the field of education.

Leadership in Action

Students will have the opportunity to complete a group service-learning project. This project will be developed, planned, and executed by the students. The service-learning experience allows students to apply leadership skills and theory as well as work with community volunteers to analyze the service-learning experience. The culmination of the Leadership Institute is for students to present a plan for their “legacy project.” Following the program, this project will be completed in the student’s community as a legacy of their leadership and volunteerism to improve their community. The “legacy project” will be conducted under the guidance of Duke TIP staff. This project will require students to draw from the knowledge gained in class and in the service-learning community.
