Archaeology and Anthropology

Students will explore the complex and often hostile encounters of Native American and Spanish cultures in the Americas during the 16th century, from the early toppling of the Inca Empire in South America in 1532 to the first European settlement in the interior of the United States at Fort San Juan 35 years later, more than 2,000 miles away! With a unique opportunity to conduct archaeological excavations at Fort San Juan paired with visits to important Incan sites, students will gain new insight into archaeological methods and techniques, Spanish colonialism and conquest, as well as the Native American Indian’s response in both North and South America.
Note: Due to the rigorous hiking involved in this trip students need sufficient physical stamina for this course.

The field of human genetics is exploding with new discoveries and medical breakthroughs. The discovery of DNA just over 50 years ago has led to the amazing realization that most human diseases are caused by changes in our DNA. However, with all the exciting new advances in human genetic research comes much controversy over whether we should be privy to all of our genetic imperfections. Should we be allowed to alter our children’s DNA to avoid diseases? Should we know we are at risk of developing a devastating disease like Alzheimer’s if there is no cure? Students will examine the science behind current human genetic research and discuss some of the major ethical questions facing our society today.

Why do humans behave the way they do? What makes us intelligent, angry, addicted, or empathetic? The field of clinical psychology seeks to answer these questions through a variety of studies: genetics, neuroimaging, personality assessments, and cognitive behavioral therapy, just to name a few. Students will emerge from this course with a better understanding of the current trends in clinical psychology, including how psychologists conduct research to measure effectiveness.
