Test on Your Own: Retesting Option

Duke TIP Test on Your Own: Retesting Option

Students currently in 8th, 9th, or 10th grade who participated in the Duke University 7th grade Talent Search and did not qualify for a Summer Studies Program, may now retest to improve their scores and possibly qualify for either a Duke TIP Summer Studies Program (Academy or Center). See Qualifying Scores below.

Students who have already qualified for Duke TIP Academy-level Summer Studies courses may also choose to retest to increase their scores and possibly qualify for Center-level Summer Studies courses available at Duke University or Davidson College. In addition, students who already qualify for Center courses at Duke may wish to retest if they are interested in enrolling in courses that require a higher Math or Verbal section test score than they originally achieved. (See Qualifying Scores below.) Research has shown that many talented students are able to increase their test scores substantially from 7th to 9th grade. As a reminder, if you choose to retake the SAT I: Reasoning Test or ACT as a high school student (9th or 10th grader), the scores will become part of your permanent test record at ACT or SAT and may be added to your transcript record at your local school.

You may take part in Duke TIP Test On Your Own-retesting program by completing the steps below.

STEP 1. To register yourself for an ACT or SAT testing date, call ACT at (319) 337-1270 or SAT at (866) 756-7346 or you may obtain registration test packets from your local high school counseling office. Complete the registration form and return it with your payment directly to ACT for the ACT Assessment Test or to the Educational Testing Service (ETS) for the SAT: Reasoning Test. You pay no extra fee to Duke TIP for the test. Please follow the instructions carefully in the ACT or SAT application materials. Duke TIP does not register any students for testing or receive any fee. Pay your fee directly to ACT or SAT. Self-addressed envelopes are included in the registration materials provided by your local high school. The test dates that will allow you the most preparation time while also allowing adequate time for the processing of scores are:

SAT Test Dates

Registration Deadline

December 1

October 30 (if you miss the postmark deadline, there is a late registration postmark deadline of November 9 with an additional late fee).

ACT Test Dates

Registration Deadline

December 8

November 2 (if you miss the postmark deadline, there is a late registration postmark deadline of November 3-15 and with an additional late fee).

STEP 2. Once you receive your scores back from the testing agency, send a photocopy of your test scores to Duke TIP. If your updated scores qualify you for Duke TIP Summer Studies Program courses, we will send you the Duke TIP Summer Studies Program Bulletin and application in January. Please keep in mind that Duke TIP will not automatically receive a copy of updated scores for the ACT or SAT, even if you use the Duke University or Duke TIP code. You must submit a copy to:
