Test on Your Own: Retesting Option
Students currently in 8th, 9th, or 10th grade who participated in Duke TIP’s 7th Grade Talent Search but did not qualify for a Summer Studies Program may choose to retest to improve their scores.
Similarly, students who have already qualified for a Summer Studies Program may also choose to retest to increase their scores so they can:
- Attend a Center-level Summer Studies Program on Duke’s East or West Campus,
- Choose from a wider range of Center-level courses (see Qualifying Scores).
It is important to note that ACT or SAT scores earned in the 9th or 10th grade will become part of your permanent test record, and may also be added to your high-school transcript.
STEP 1: Choose your test date
The test dates that will allow students the most time to prepare while also allowing adequate time for the processing of scores for the Summer Studies Program application period are:
- ACT: October 24, 2009 (registration deadline is September 18, 2009)
- SAT: November 7, 2009 (registration deadline is October 1, 2009)
STEP 2: Register online to take the ACT or SAT
Note: You must be at least 13 years old to create an account with the College Board. You can also register by phone (call ACT at (319) 337-1270 or the College Board (SAT) at (866) 756-7346) or by mail (obtain test registration materials from your local high-school counseling office and send your registration form and payment directly to ACT or SAT).
STEP 3: Take the test!
Duke TIP will not automatically receive a copy of your updated scores, so once you receive your score report, send the scores to Duke TIP at:

If your new scores qualify you for a Duke TIP Summer Studies Program, you can apply to the program online in January, 2010. Students who take the ACT or SAT tests as 8th, 9th, or 10th graders must earn slightly higher qualifying scores than students who test as 7th graders.
