EXPLORE is a multiple-choice test developed by ACT to evaluate 8th grade students’ academic development in English, Mathematics, Reading, and Science. The Duke TIP 4th/5th Grade Talent Search offers the EXPLORE test to academically talented elementary students as an above-level test.
How can my child benefit from taking an 8th grade test?
Grade level achievement tests are able to identify academically talented students but may not be able to
determine the degree of that ability, especially if it is very high. An above-level test offers parents and
educators an opportunity to assess the student’s academic level and potential and to determine whether
or not the child is receiving academic challenges appropriate to his or her ability through current
curriculum and programs.
Who is invited to participate in EXPLORE testing?
The EXPLORE test is offered only to students who are currently enrolled in the Duke TIP 4th/5th Grade
Talent Search. The fact that you received the postcard mailing means that your child is already enrolled
in the program.
What will my child miss by not taking the EXPLORE test?
Participation in the EXPLORE test is completely optional. All 4th/5th Grade Talent Search students are
welcome to participate in any programs/opportunities offered through the Duke TIP 4th/5th Grade Talent
Search, whether or not they test.
There isn’t a test site near our home but I don’t want my child to miss out on a valuable opportunity. What do you recommend?
Whether or not to travel to get to a test site is entirely up to you, but we do not recommend long-distance travel or overnight stays for the sole purpose of taking the EXPLORE test. ACT EXPLORE is constantly looking for test centers to enable students to test close to their home. If your school is interested in becoming an EXPLORE test center please contact ACT EXPLORE at (319) 337-1520.
What can I do to help my child prepare to take the EXPLORE test?
An information booklet with test taking tips and sample test questions will be mailed with the student’s admission ticket. Review the materials, keeping in mind that EXPLORE is intended for 8th grade students and 4th/5th Grade Talent Search participants should expect it to be more challenging than other tests they have taken. This will help reduce apprehension and frustration, allowing students who are accustomed to doing well on tests to do their best without feeling pressured to get all the answers correct.
